Recently I was sent some of the new Vidal Sassoon Salonist hair colourants from SuperSavvyMe as part of one of their testing trials. Unfortunately due to my hair being platinum I couldn’t use any of the colours they sent on myself, so I went in search of a guinea pig to try out this new colouring system. Here are my thoughts.

Vidal Sassoon Salonist Permanent Hair Colour 3/0 Darkest Neutral Brown

This new permanent hair colour is pretty unique in my opinion. Over the years (I have been colouring my own hair now for around 25 years and other peoples in the region of 18) I have never used a box dye like it and was really intrigued with how it worked and how it would perform.

Here is a little information about Vidal Sassoon Salonist hair dye…

Nothing surpasses professional application for colour full of depth & tones. Professionals treat roots first then lengths separately, because uncoloured hair at your roots takes colour differently than previously coloured hair in the lengths. Inspired by this salon technique, the Experts at Vidal Sassoon Atelier created VS Salonist™, a revolutionary 2-step colouring method that treats your roots and lengths separately – bringing Salon Technique home.

The result is stunning, seamlessly blended hair colour with lots of depth and tones. Vidal Sassoon Salonist 3/0 Darkest Neutral Brown permanent hair dye is seamlessly blended for a premium look and a rich, vibrant colour full of depth and tones. It’s more than colour. It’s a work of art! Colour like a Colourist, and try this advanced Salon Technique at Home.

What did disappoint me initially was the instructions. This dye only included instructions for those who had previously coloured their hair before (In the past 6 months) and not for those who were colouring for the first time (Or who hadn’t coloured their hair in over 6 months). The instructions are available online, but I did feel this was a slight faux pas on their behalf. There are 2 different methods for application and I’ve included a link here which shows videos on the methods and also a step by step guide too – link. I really wanted to try the previously coloured version but as my guinea pig hadn’t coloured their hair in a VERY long time I used the more than 6 months method. I do recommend reading the instructions thoroughly as this hair dye really is VERY DIFFERENT in how you apply it and you use things in a different way. The biggest change you will probably notice straight away is there is not application bottle and you will be using a brush and bowl/tub (Which is supplied). Before you get started though as always be colour safe and make sure you do a sensitivity test and also a strand test.

My client/guinea pig (Daughter who wanted her hair darker, why I have no idea as she had the most gorgeous light golden brown hair) was a base 6 with VERY golden undertones. I was happy using the 3 on her hair as it would only be taking the colour 3 shades darker (2 at the roots( and due to the golden undertones I knew the colour would not be flat and would have dimension. We followed the instructions to the letter. Her hair is rather long as you can see and medium thickness. I did manage to only use 1 box but I would recommend to those who have thick hair that 2 boxes may be better as we only just were able to do it (And I didn’t have another box of the 3.0 shade).

After applying the colour to the roots, then the midlenths/ends, leaving it to develop, then applying the serum and leaving that a little while longer, rinsing and conditioning <takes a breath>, here are the results…

The colour is even, its glossy, its seamless and although her ends were slightly lighter (From an ombre she had over a year ago) the colour was the same from root to tip. I do think the pictures don’t do it justice as we were using the light from the window and looks slightly uneven in them but I assure you that this was because of the light from the window and not anything else, but the colour really was quite impressive. It looked professional. Now I know what you are thinking, ‘But you are qualified so of course it would looks professional’ but in honesty, I do think anyone could do this as long as they follow the directions or get a friend to help with the areas they can’t see.

I did wonder about fade as her hair was 3 shades lighter to start and my daughter does like to swim etc which can really wash dyes out, however by using a ‘coloured hair’ shampoo and using the conditioner that came with the product once a week so far we’ve seen very minimal fade (Only on the previously bleached areas) and the colour still looks amazing. I would also like to add that condition wise there was no damage at all and her hair looked and felt as good as it did when I first started.

Overall, I’ve been really impressed and I just wished I could have tried the less than 6 months method as I do feel that will be the biggest ‘tell’ for this product and its claims. When ‘A’ needs her roots doing I will add an update below to let you know how the product performed then. But as it stands now, this hair colour really is pretty amazing and I would recommend it.

The Vidal Sassoon Salonist is available in a variety of shades, it costs £9.99 but at present cant be found at Boots (In stores and online) for the discounted price of £7.99.
