I took advantage recently of the 3 for 2 on Maybelline at Boots and picked up the Superstay Better Skin Foundation, here are my thoughts on their new foundation…
Now for those of you new to my blog you may not know but I love to fake tan. Since going back to light blonde I have stopped doing this completely which means I have 1 foundation that matches my skin and nothing else. So, when I saw that Better Skin the new foundation from Maybelline was part of the 3 for 2 offer in Boots, I decided to get it and find out whether I thought it lived up to its claims.
Here is a some information about Better Skin Foundation from Maybelline…
Dull, blotchy, uneven skin? Visibly improves your skin every minute you’re in it.
Our first hydrating foundation with Actyl C and SPF 20. Flawless all-day coverage.
The formula helps skin look more radiant, fresher and even, with all-day wear.
I was a huge fan of Superstay 24h Foundation (Review here) and after liking that formula thought I would feel the same about Better Skin, however I actually only think its ok. I do have reasons to back this up though and will take you though my likes and dislikes…
The foundation has pump action bottle which means you easily can ‘manage’ how much product you are using. By adding a little at a time it means you are wasting. I always prefer pump action bottles, so this was a plus point for me.
The shade range is darker than I would expect. By that I mean I chose shade Light Beige 005 (It was more pink toned than Light Ivory which I swatched and looked more yellow toned), these 2 shades appear to be the lightest shades in the collection and still its a bit dark for me. Nothing I can’t sort out with some light face powder but even so. So, for the ladies with SUPER PALE skin, you may struggle with this foundation, swatching is definitely recommended!
Coverage wise when I was in Superdrug and looking at a display it stated this was a full coverage foundation. I have since not read that anywhere else, but am going to try and get a photo of the display to prove I saw it. Either way, this foundation would only be full coverage if you ‘lightly/gently’ built it up on the skin. I have gone up to 2-3 fine layers without getting caking, however I did not achieve full coverage either. I would say this is more of a medium coverage and it is build-able. Application wise I have found a buffing brush best (Fingers didn’t blend it very well and a foundation brush left streaks which were hard to remove).
The finish is strange. It almost feels ‘tacky’ or ‘sticky’ on your skin. Its not matte but its not dewy, somewhere in between and one thing I did like was that my skin felt like it could breathe.
It did last well on my skin, that is a plus point but not as well as the Superstay 24h foundation did. It does state this is an ‘All day wear’ foundation so I would expect it to last me at least a 9-5 job time, but after about 4 hours I definitely noticed some patches.
So, would I recommend this foundations? Well, it does have a nice finish on my skin and I’ve had no reaction what so ever to the product (Even on my eczema at present which is a little sore). My skin felt like it could breathe even with a reasonable coverage and it evened out my skin tone too. I haven’t been using the product long enough to see if it does improve my skins appearance, it is quite moisturising though. I just feel slightly ‘meh’ and on the fence about this foundation. I wanted to love it, but I don’t. It may be one of those that grows on me, but at present I just feel a little disappointed. I feel this is definitely a foundation you need to try before you buy.
