Earlier this year I started hearing about the Maui Moisture range in Superdrug. Everything was super positive when it came to reviews, so I had to try some. Next thing I had to decide was what ones as there are a few for different hair types. As I am getting older and my hair is thinning I decided on the Maui Moisture Thicken & Restore + Bamboo Fiber products. Here are my thoughts after using them 6 weeks.

Too often I review things I love and its rare I include something I didn’t like or couldn’t get on with. My feelings on these Maui Moisture products are a little mixed if I’m honest. But I am hoping it will help someone out there decide whether the products are for them.

What initially drew me to the range was how natural the products sound. The Ingredients of the Maui Moisture range is extremely natural and something new to the hair market. The first ingredient is pure aloe vera which we all know is very hydrating plus natural. Its great for the skin, so will be good for the scalp too. Also being sulphate free the products would be good for those with sensitive scalps (Psoriasis, eczema etc), great for the hairs health and condition. Without silicones too the results would be less likely to build up and you would have a truer picture of your hairs health. The price wasn’t as cheap as some, but for products of this type on the market it was reasonable.

When I first used the shampoo I forgot the key thing when it comes to sulphate shampoos, they don’t lather great. So I obviously used more product to get that lather. In honesty this lathers better than some sulphate free shampoos. As I found time went on I used less and my hair still felt as clean. The scent of the shampoo is heavenly! In fact if you can get into Superdrug or Boots to smell any of the range I recommend it. The scent isn’t overpowering but it does linger on your hair after.

I found when you rinsed your hair it felt clean and fresh. There wasn’t a heavy feeling to my hair even wet. I always condition my hair after shampoo, but even so my hair did feel soft and if I had of dried it straight after would have looked ok. The shampoo has strengthening claims and I found while using this my hair loss was better. I don’t really have breakage but will say my hair felt stronger and the elasticity was good when wet. I won’t comment on the thickening claims as I obviously used the conditioner after, so will go into that later.

Over all, I really liked the Maui Moisture Thicken and Restore shampoo. My hair felt clean, soft and looked healthy (Yes I did dry it once without conditioner but would recommend you use conditioner after every shampoo). I loved the scent and my psoriasis didn’t flare up while using it. I did feel the £8.99 price tag was a little steep for a non professional product, but not unrealistic when you look at the ingredients. The shampoo was worth a 4 out of 5 stars.

Now the Maui Moisture Thicken & Restore + Bamboo Fiber conditioner is where my issues started. The first time I used the conditioner I had an ‘indifferent’ feeling towards it. It was ok. Nothing special. I’ve had similar results when desperate and used Tesco’s coconut conditioner (I used to use that to dilute Manic Panic/Directions). I felt maybe it was a ‘time’ thing. I needed to leave the conditioner on longer, use it for a longer period. The directions state to leave this one 3-5 minutes, I was still finding my hair felt, bitty. I have some layers in my hair and if I run my hand down my head when its wet I cannot feel where they end. But after using this conditioner I could feel the ends still when it was wet. It was like it was drying my ends out. Still I persevered.

But with time my hair was getting dryer, not softer. This I found was really discouraging obviously as its a conditioner! My hair felt tangly and I could only thing it was the conditioner. I even tried not adding ANY products to my hair and just these 2. But still the same result. What was really disheartening was that my hair indeed was fuller! The conditioner (Maybe it was the shampoo too I can’t say) was helping give me a fuller head of hair. You could see the difference.

Although I didn’t experience any breakage and or hair loss while using the bamboo fibres conditioner my hair didn’t feel good. It looked ok, there was shine there and it smelt amazing but my ends definitely felt drier even after I gave it a trim. I do wonder if someone who has natural, non coloured hair would be a better candidate for this conditioner. I feel that this would work for their hair type. My hair although I have had a lot of the bleach cut out now still has a little on the ends, the same place that was drying out using the conditioner.

Over all the conditioner did make my hair feel fuller, there was no breakage, it looks glossy although the ends did look dry. The conditioner is £8.99 too, I don’t feel its worth it for me personally when I wasn’t getting… Well conditioned hair. I’d give the conditioner 2½ stars and recommend it for those who have normal to greasy hair.

So to conclude I did like the range, but I didn’t love it. The conditioner was a let down for me and I was gutted if I’m honest. I wanted to love it! I may try one of those other conditioners in the Maui Moisture range at a later date. The price isn’t terrible for natural products (Look at Body Shop/Lush prices) and I do feel these are quality products. Unfortunately though the conditioner just wasn’t right for my hair. The scents are amazing and the 385ml bottles last a decent time too. I bought these products while on offer at Superdrug for £12 I believe.

You can purchase the Maui Moisture range at Superdrug and Boots. The shampoos and conditioners are priced at £8.99 each for 385ml/13 US fl.oz.
