You may remember I mentioned the He-Shi Face & Body Tanning Gel in my April Favourites recently (Video here). Its a great product and I thought it was about time to review it for you, especially now as so I can tell you how it fades off too. Here are my thoughts and before/after pics.
I love tanning products and have a lot of different fake tans in creams and mousses. But I wanted something different and hadn’t tried a gel, so thought I’d give the He-Shi Face & Body Tanning Gel as I’d not tried anything from the brand before. I also had read that the Tanning Gel was good for those with dry skin and being a product for face and body I was curious as to how it would fair.
Here is some information on the He-Shi Face & Body Tanning Gel….
HE-SHI FACE & BODY TANNING GEL is ideal for dry skin and achieving an instant golden tan. This highly moisturising self tanning gel, tans on contact and will last up to 7 – 10 days.
He-Shi Face and Body Tanning Gel glides onto the skin and is quickly absorbed due to its incredibly light, smooth and moisturising texture.
With its ‘see where it goes’ formula you can be confident of not developing streaks or patches. If desired the gel can be reapplied for a deeper instant colour.
Suitable for use all over the body including the facial area.
Made from 100% natural DHA and is an odourless, paraben and alcohol free formulation.

As I’d used tanning creams before I wasn’t worried about application with this one. I’ve been fake tanning over 25 years now, so consider myself a pro at doing it (Well, on myself anyway!). The Tanning Gel is great as its obviously tinted, so instantly you can see where you have applied it. Unlike the lotions, you don’t get streaks when applying it so could easily wear this out while it develops, although bare in mind this has no SPF! Application for me was done with a tanning mitt. For me personally I feel the mitts are the best way to apply mousses/lotions/gels.
Initial thoughts on application was my skin felt really hydrated. The tanning gel dries within 10 minutes and you aren’t left with tacky feeling skin. I had a nice glow to my skin which as I said above wasn’t streaky, so I could have easily gone out with this one (Once it had dried, as then it wouldn’t stain my clothes). I think one of the biggest things with this tanning gel is the scent, or lack of. He-Shi have really done a great job of designing products which don’t smell feminine and can easily be used by men and women. On the skin I couldn’t smell anything at all, so this would be perfect for guys to use! I think you can see from the pic above, my skin looked good and moisturised, it wasn ‘t matte and looked natural. This was the case for my face too.
I nearly always fake tan at night, so the tanning gel was applied around 6-7pm at night and then showered off the following day. There was no transfer on my pjs or bed linen which I thought was great. As you can see from the pic above my skin did have a nice medium golden tan to it (No TANGO man in sight!), it felt hydrated (Unlike after tanning mousse) and was not streaky at all. Application of this product was a doddle, so I definitely recommend this one for those hard areas like feet, hands etc. There was that slight biscuit scent to my skin, but after applying a little body lotion you couldn’t smell it at all (Even body spray would have masked it) and this disappeared after my following shower.
I don’t usually include this bit in my reviews but thought I would this time. So, did the He-Shi Face & Body Tanning Gel fade ok? Well, I applied this 14 days ago. I still have a slightly glow to my skin and am not back to my ‘paleness’/ however its faded evenly (Bar under my fitbit charge, but I find with any watch like things, you always fade quicker where you sweat!). I had to re-apply it to my face after about 5 days, all I did was apply it with my mitt and take it onto my neck too. It blended fine with the rest of my tan and you wouldn’t have known I’d re-did it. I find with too many tanning products you end up fading all over the place and have hard to remove bits that stick out like a sore thumb (See my Unreal Tan Eraser post for details of how to get ride of those bits). This is probably the best tan I’ve used for an even fade!
So, over all have I enjoyed using He-Shi Face & Body Tanning Gel? Yes I have! I love the gel formula and found it easy to apply. It looks good on the skin after application, gives you a nice golden tan, is great for men and women due to its lack of scent and lasts, plus fades well as it wears off (Which takes about 14 days for me). You can also build this up to a deeper tan by reapply it again like other fake tans! So, I highly recommend this one, its hydrating and works well on my dry skin! I definitely will be looking at more He-Shi products now as this ones really impressed me.
I purchased my He-Shi Face & Body Tanning Gel from Boots, its 150ml of product for £17.50.
