Clothes shopping can be expensive, let’s be honest. But having a few ‘staple’ items in your wardrobe can mean you are keeping your look fresh and interesting without breaking the bank.
What is a staple?
staple – noun [C] (BASIC)
Today I wanted to share with you some of my staple item picks from Debenhams that won’t have you needing to take out a bank loan and can see you through the season change from Summer to Autumn/Winter. In this post I will be talking about the items and in some future OOTD (Outfit of the day) posts I’ll be showing you how to wear the items.
Some of these items you may thing are boring, but its how you wear them and what you team them with that makes them exciting. These are my essential staples and things I wear on a day to day basis.
Its plain, its black (Yes you will notice many of my pics are black), so why do I need it? Well, a simple black top will never go out of fashion. This piece is like a t-shirt at all, its a 3/4 sleeve black top which has some room to it. This item is a great staple piece as like many of my other choices it can be worn in a variety of ways. I love that Debenhams has concession stores and Warehouse is one of them (I’m a huge fan of their clothing and bags! In fact this item was on my Warehouse Wishlist recently – post here). This boyfriend top looks great with skirts and jeans. Pop it under a shirt, wear it with a biker jacket – in honesty the choices are endless. It also looks great with statement jewellery and scarves. At £16.00 it won’t break the bank and will last you future seasons too.
Stripes come and go in fashion, but they always look elegant. No matter what your size (I am not small by any means and still will wear stripes), stripes can give an outfit a little more definition without being too much. I love this Navy breton stripe from Red Herring as its looks fabulous with jeans, a cute leather skirt or even leggings! I feel very Parisian when I wear it and this print has been in my wardrobe now for a few years. I love wearing them with blazers or my biker jacket. At £14.00 its a good price and I find when washed, hold their shape well and colours look crisp too.
A cardigan. Yes I know, boring isn’t it? Well, for me its a wardrobe staple. In fact I have a few different ones in an assortment of colours. For me the longline cardigan from Red Herring is not just a staple, but an ESSENTIAL! Whether I’m dressing up or down I find these a must. I team mine with jeans, trousers, skirts and even dresses! Its a very versatile item and will not just last this season but seasons to come.
Vest are something I wear DAILY! I have so many of these jersey vests and this one above from Red Herring is just an example (I have this one black, white and grey from Red Herring). Vests for me are staples because they are inexpensive and can be great for layering (Also perfect if you are menopausal – just saying!). I wear my vests under shirts, jumpers, cardigans, jackets, blazers… In honesty there isn’t anything one of these won’t go with. If you are like me and wear a lot of black as its what you are comfortable in, a vest can be the place where you splash some colour. Being so inexpensive these vest from Red Herring are one of the few I find that hold their shape time after time! Currently at £1.80 in the sale, but even when full price at around £4.00 its a staple I cannot live without.
I say a LBD (Little black dress) and you immediately think of something for the evening right? Well, a LBD can also be a casual item and one you can wear in the day too. Let’s talk about this cute LBD from Oasis (Another concession at Debenhams). This looks cute and is very wearable in the day with a variety of things. Being black and plain means you can dress it up with some accessories. It also looks good with a smart blazer or more casual with a biker jacket. Feeling warm and cosy, get some knitted tights and pop a cardigan with it. If you are too self concious for tights, pop some leggings with it! I love dressing this up with a patterned scarf or a statement necklace. At only £26.00 its a really comfortable item too and very flattering on the figure.
A decent pair of jeans. Now I only wear skinny jeans and I am not a small girl (Size 16/18). Skinny jeans are not just for people who are skinny! I love these ones from the Designers at Debenhams by Jasper Conran. At £40.00 they are a little more than some brands, but these looks amazing on and are a VERY generous fit (Makes you feel good when you drop a size in your jeans). Being a deep navy they are a little smarter than your average jeans, but still can be dressed up or down. Jeans never go out of fashion, its just the cut/style that changes. I love wearing mine with heels on an evening out or with boots in the day time.
Accessories. Any outfit can do with an accessory or two. Whether it’s dramatic earrings, bracelets, belts or a statement necklace. Although I love large statement necklaces this Spike Fan necklace from the Red Herring range really caught my eye. Its quite understated but really stands out. I don’t think you can ever have too many accessories and the same outfit can change dramatically but just adding different jewellery. This necklace is only £6.00 and will look good with so many different outfits its a must have in my books.
My final staple item is a black bag. Black NEVER goes out of fashion, so a black bag will always be a good choice. This gorgeous studded number from Anna Smith is sneaky – yes it has pink detailing on the front, what it doesn’t show you in this pic is the bright pink base of the bag. This is something you can add to with your accessories of your outfit, giving you some colour without being too much. I love this bag as its a good size and its versatile enough to go with almost anything (Ok maybe not an evening dress, but we can’t have it all!). What’s better is its on sale still at £30.00, so a bargain too!
