As I was topping up my auburn hair today, I thought I would review L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Amber 645 for you and share with you my thoughts…
Although I have reviewed Castings Creme Gloss before (But for in Golden Honey 730 – review here), here is a little information about the hair colourant…

So my goal with this colour was to re-tone my hair, see without going into too much detail as much as I love my auburn hair its more high maintenance than when I was red! My mid-lengths and ends do not hold the colour at all (Even with a filler) and after a few washes my ends are back to a dark golden blonde. As I had one more of the L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Amber 645 left (I bought them on offer at Superdrug a month ago and had already used one then), I thought I would review it for you before I go brown and include the box info and before and afters.
Like most box dyes, the contents is pretty self explanatory – 1 tube of crème colourant (48 ml), 1 tube of developer crème (72 ml), 1 precision tip applicator 1 bottle of Nutri-Shine conditioner (40 ml), 1 pair of professional quality gloves, 1 instruction leaflet.
As with all hair dyes first and foremost, do a sensitivity test at least 48 hours before to see if you are allergic to the product – it literally takes a minute to do and could save you a lot of pain and grief. I also recommend a strand test too.
The colourant is applied to wet hair that has not been washed (All I do is shower my hair wet, then towel dry it). You leave the colour on for about 20 minutes (I usually go about 25 with mine), rinse thoroughly and then condition and rinse again. Easy right?
Firstly, do not be alarmed with this colour. Yes its called Amber and is a warm ginger/auburn shade. While the colour is on your hair, it does tend too look a little like Ribena, but does wash off to a warm auburn shade – at least on me it does.
The L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss colours all claim they leave your hair glossy and shiny, for me yes they do. Although, I do find them a little drying on my hair. I NEVER use the conditioner they provide as I can’t get a comb through my hair after otherwise and always use a different one (Usually another colour lock conditioner from a different brand). I find the dryness only really lasts about 1 wash and then my hair is back to its super soft self.
I find their colour results fairly accurate too, although I am usually using the product with my hair close to my natural depth and shade. You can get colour buildup with this product making the result darker each time, so bare that in mind. There are 2 ways of using this colour, 1 for those with regrowth or who have coloured before and the other for those who haven’t coloured for a while – this is where the strand test comes in handy.
Amber is a beautiful auburn shade and it really does add good warm tones to your hair. If you are a medium/dark blonde its probably going to take you to a warm auburn (Dark I say it) ginger – just like on the box really. It will not lighten your hair as its not designed too, this product just deposits colour and tones your hair. If your hair is darker, say a light to medium brown its going to give you an auburn tone on your brown hair. It will not lighten it, but will give a multi tonal effect if you say had high lights, or areas of hair that are lighter.
L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Amber 645 is probably my favourite auburn shade available in pharmacies/drugstores. It is a lovely depth not being too dark and sitting around a dark blonde/light brown shade and very warm (Obviously). If my hair would actually ‘hold’ the colour, I would be happy. However it doesn’t last long due to the porosity of my hair. So, I will only be using this as a ‘prepig’ and nothing else. As my other half Mark said, ‘Boo, maybe you aren’t meant to be auburn’ and unfortunately I think he is right. Still, if you can get this colour to work and grab on your hair – do it!
L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Amber 645 can be purchased from Boots, Superdrug, other pharmacies and supermarkets. It retails at around £6.49 and is often on offer if you shop around.
