L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Light Frosted Blonde 1013

Back with a review I think will help a lot of girls looking for a blue based semi permanent dye for orange tones, L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Light Frosted Blonde 1013.

One of the biggest questions I get via email and Twitter/YouTube is how to tone down that brassy orange tone you get when bleaching to blonde and can I recommend a semi permanent colour. It’s not the easiest thing to find a toning colour for orange tones in the drugstore/pharmacy. But, I may have a solution for you. Now when I say orange tones, you must bare in mind the orange I am talking about. This is the pale orange (Light gingery blonde) kind you get before yellow, not a deeper orange/red that looks more ginger/auburn toned.

Here is a little information about L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Light Frosted Blonde 1013…

Casting Crème Gloss is a no ammonia hair colourant that gives your hair visible shimmering tones, glossy shine and blends away grey. Give your hair a total beauty treatment with Casting Crème Gloss, for glossy rich, natural-looking colour with visible shimmering tones.

Now let’s get a little technical here about the colour and what the actual colour number means on the box. This is VERY important, as this will explain to you why it will help you. Firstly lets talk about the beginning of the number – 1013. If you were to see this on a professional L’Oreal dye in a salon, you may see it as 10.13 or 10/13. 10 represents the shade colour, as in how light or dark. As you can see from the box 10 is a light blonde – DO NOT GET CONFUSED AND THINK YOUR HAIR IS GOING TO BECOME THIS LIGHT BLONDE IF ITS NOT ALREADY AROUND THIS SHADE!! Then let’s talk about the last 2 number, now each number represents a tone, the first number ‘1’ represents the primary tone and the second number ‘3’ represents the secondary tone. Now ‘1’ in the L’Oreal colouring system (This is for L’Oreal and not other brands!) represents blue (Now you can see why I chose this one although shade 1010 will also be good, I like a gold undertone – hence the 3), ‘3’ represents gold. So , you have a light blonde blue based toner with a secondary undertone of gold. But, if you do not like a gold undertone, I recommend 1010. And that concludes my hair science lesson for today.

As with all L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss colours, the contents are all pretty much the same. Each box contains; 1 tube of crème colourant (48 ml), 1 tube of developer crème (72 ml), 1 precision tip applicator 1 bottle of Nutri-Shine conditioner (40 ml), 1 pair of professional quality gloves, 1 instruction leaflet.

As with ALL my colour reviews, I like to show you the colour predictions on the box as this is something I know many of you look for in posts and can’t always find when searching a colour online.

The colourant can be applied 2 ways if you read the instructions (BUT IS ALWAYS APPLIED TO WET, NOT SHAMPOOED, TOWEL DRIED HAIR), 1 method is for a full head, the other regrowth. Now, when I am toning I think it is even more ESSENTIAL to do a strand test so you know you aren’t over toning and are achieving the best results possible. I placed the colour on my root area (Where it was warmest) for 10 minutes, I then worked it through to my ends (Which were golden/yellow) for 5 minutes. This was as per my strand result, make sure you do one as your times may differ. After application, I then washed the colour from my hair, conditioned and then dried it.

As you can see from my before and after the warm, brassy, orange tones are neutralised, leaving a more even golden result. This is exactly what I wanted to achieve. Now if your hair was not a light orange tone and you applied this colour, it would neutralise some of the orange but not all as it would not be a strong enough blue. It also would likely take the orange colour darker. This is why I said its more suitable for that light canary, gingery blonde colour.

Over all, my hair has not dropped in shade/depth at all. It is still a base 8 medium blonde after toning. However, the orange has neutralised, the golden tones are showing through nicely and my hair now looks more even toned (Even though the ends are still a 9 and I do still have the subtle ombre I started with).

This L’Oreal Castings product contains lemon extract which as you may know is a lighting agent. I did notice on my roots (Natural) hair that it did lift minimally. I wanted to make that be known in this review. A semi/demi permanent product is not designed to lift just deposit. Do not use this product thinking its going to lift your hair to a light blonde, it won’t. It is designed to add cool tones to your hair, which in brassy hair can give the appearance of a lighter shade. Remember, if you do not like golden tones, the L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss in Light Iced Blonde 1010 will probably suit you more.

That all being said I done I hope this review helps some people. Please remember to be colour safe, stand test and sensitivity test – its is VERY important. Bare in mind the result I achieved may not be the same for you. Hence a strand test is essential. Also, there is a big difference between red/orange and orange, just as there is a big difference between orange and orange/yellow when colouring/bleaching. Semi permanent colours and toners can only do so much.

I purchased my L’Oreal Casting Creme Gloss Light Frosted Blonde 1013 from Superdrug, it cost £6.49. It is also available at Boots, some pharmacies and supermarkets.

Lots of Love,
